Refugee Housing / Modular Disorder

The Modular Disorder Workshop was a competition project with students from NYIT and Brandenburg Tech University from Cottbus, Germany. One week in spring the Germany students would visit and study potential of refugee housing in New York City, and then in the summer NYIT students were able to visit Berlin to see actual refugee camps and design a better solution to improve housing. Joined with a team of Germany and New York students, we designed and thought out a new paneling system that would work on existing structures.

If we could build up permanent structural cores and then develop various panel types, we could allow refugees be able to edit and customize their livable space in order to accommodate their needs. Standard panels turned into dynamic panels as we thought of ideas of shops, educational booths and other types of crafts being able to integrate with units. People can live inside a unit, but their panel towards the hallway could open and become a stall for a shop.
