Estuarium Design - Pier 26

The River Estuarium Design Project was focused on Pier 26 in New York City. A new building typology that acted as an aquarium but also a research facility doing various studies with the Hudson River. The building also has an educational sector that focused on field trips, summer school studies and educational assistance to college students. The designed focused on how to utilize the pier which also is apart of a large park/walkway for the public and how to seamlessly transition spaces from public to private allowing research to be undisturbed but available for the public to see with their own eyes.

This design focused on a new type of aquarium experience as an important component to the research facility is the dry labs and wet labs which use distinct piping for certain types of water to acclimate organisms from various conditions. The "pipe" idea formed to create a new type of viewing tank that can transform and become tables, display, and filter systems that not only utilize the structure and mechanical works of the building, but brings new types of views and ways to interact and visualize the creatures within the project.
